One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is kind of the quintessential magical realism book and it is quite good as well. Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore also fits into the genre, is more modern and also excellent.

Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins.

What is more magical than a Can o' Beans, a Dirty Sock, a Spoon, a Painted Stick and a Conch Shell setting off on a cross country road trip to save the girl, all aware that by saving the girl they also save the world?

Have you read Sarah Addison Allen? She's southern magical realism light with a dash of romance. Sugar Queen is my favorite, though Garden Spells is I think her more well known book.
